Sebagai cendekiawan, doktor ilmu manajemen dari Universitas Illionis at Urbana-Campaign ini mengaku tak ingin terkurung hanya di kampus almamaternya. Ia merambah dunia luar, bergaul dengan ilmuwan bidang lain, berbicara kepada para pelaku bisnis, lewat seminar atau talkshownya di televisi. Selain sebagai akademisi, lewat RKS (Rhenald Kasali) Management ia menyelenggarakan jasa konsultansi manajemen. Di televisi, ia menjadi host acara Bedah Bisnis Rhenald Kasali, acara yang menampilkan para entrepreneur sukses dari berbagai bidang dan penjuru Indonesia. "Otak manusia seperti parasut. Ia baru bekerja kalau terbuka," katanya, menjelaskan mengapa ia tak pernah mau hanya berada di menara gading kampusnya. Ia pun mengundang orang luar, para praktisi, menjadi pengajar di program yang ia pimpin. Mulai dari Robby Djohan dan Abdul Gani, dua bankir kenamaan, Phillip Purnama, eksekutif Bogasari yang lulusan Harvard, Bambang Bhakti, mantan eksekutif Coca Cola dan kolumnis WartaBisnis, dan banyak lagi. Perkenalannya dengan Phillip membawanya pula berhubungan dengan Michael Porter, Guru Bisnis paling top dunia. Di sini ia pun tak membuang kesempatan. Bersama Phillip yang merupakan asuhan langsung Porter, Rhenald memprakarsai kuliah jarak jauh Porter setiap pekan untuk para mahasiswanya. Disamping itu, ia masih menjadi dosen terbang di program magister manajemen di berbagai universitas negeri, ke Lampung, Tanjung Pura hingga Bali. "Tiga tahun lagi masa tugas saya di sini selesai. Saya bercita-cita punya semacam padepokan seperti Stephen Covey. Mengajar tentang leadership. Saya sungguh tertarik tentang topik itu," tutur dia. Beberapa dekade lalu ia selalu merasa cemburu dengan naik daunnya para ekonom makro sebelum ini. Menurut dia, topik-topik ekonomi makro selama ini memang sangat populer, berkat dukungan media massa. Namun, topik semisal pemasaran, kurang mendapat perhatian. Ia tak menyerah. Berkat pengalamannya bekerja sebagai wartawan, ia pun menulis di berbagai media massa, walau pun di sejumlah jurnal ia juga meluangkan waktu. Tulisannya mendapat sambutan hangat. Di kampus UI di Depok, ruang kerjanya yang mungil tetapi resik dihiasi sejumlah perangkat teknologi informasi, yang ia akui membantu dia mengakses 'dunia.' Sebuah suasana kontras dengan keadaaan kantornya dahulu. Soalnya, ketika pertamakali diminta membenahi program pascasarjana UI itu dulu, ia mengaku kantornya adalah sebuah ruang di pojok, dekat tempat sampah. Mahasiswanya bisa dihitung dengan jari, uang di kas hanya Rp5 juta. Kini program yang diasuhnya diikuti tak kurang dari 200 mahasiswa, yang wangi, modis dan pintar. Rhenald Kasali: Saya kira itu tidak bisa lepas dari Hermawan Kertajaya. Ketika itu dia baru lepas dari Sampoerna, dia seorang direktur di sana, dari perusahaan besar. Terus kemudian dia bicara marketing, dia datang tepat pada waktunya, di saat kita sedang mempersoalkan perusahaan-perusahaan kita yang seperti tumpul ujungnya. Economics dalam membaca pasar memakai kaca mata daya beli. Sedangkan kami orang marketing melihat pasar itu adalah kekuatan dari keinginan membeli. Bagaimana pemerintah menstimulasi perekonomian?. Dengan tingkat bunga rendah, inflasi rendah. Barang tersedia. Sedangkan kami mengatakan well, jangan turunkan harga minyak goreng Bimoli dan Filma. Perbanyak lah minyak goreng komoditi. Dalam arti minyak goreng curah. Filma itu dipakai oleh orang-orang kaya. Meskipun diturunin harganya, tidak menstimulasi permintaan. Orang kaya membeli karena brand bukan karena harga. Yang kedua, ternyata ekonomi makro bicara mengenai aggregate demand. Sedangkan kita bicara mengenai segmented demand. Maka kita ajarkan segmentasi. Tahun 1998 itu saya luncurkan buku saya tentang itu. Lagi-lagi kita mengubah cara pandang mereka. Kita bicara tentang brand saat itu. Tapi kita sudah memberitahu mereka. Hey, pasar tidak begitu. Yang ketiga, orang makro melihat pasar selalu komoditi. Per Kategori. Permintaan otomotif, permintaan properti. Kalau kita nggak. Kita bilang permintaan Toyota Kijang tahun ini gimana. Timor abis, Toyota Kijang bagus. Tapi kalau ekonom akan bilang pasar otomotif akan hancur. Karena dirata-rata semuanya. Sementara itu, di kalangan praktisi bisnis sendiri terdapat pula perdebatan yang seru tentang seberapa penting dan dominan pendekatan marketing dibanding pendekatan lain dalam pengelolaan perusahaan. Ibaratnya mereka sudah punya kereta api supercepat, kita masih saja naik Parahyangan, Jakarta Bandung, masih 4 jam, masih banyak rintangan. Lantas saya berpikir, kalau mau jalan kenceng, lokomotif jangan hanya ditaruh di depan. Ada tiga lokomotif, di depan, di tengah dan di belakang. Lokomotif ini lah yang kita sebut manajemen. Yang di depan marketing . Namun, kalau dia nyundul-nyundul sementara rangkaian yang dibawa panjang dan jalan lambat, maka dalamnya harus dibenahi. Itu sebabnya saya pergi belajar ke Michael Porter mengenai strategi. Bukan lagi sekadar marketing. Jadi Anda lebih sebagai pakar strategi daripada pemasaran? Gua ngga tau. Terserah pasar. Tapi saya pikir, marketing tidak hanya bisa sebagai marketing. Orang akademik mengatakan marketing is not just marketing, its marketing management. Kalau orang yang berasal dari lapangan, praktisi, mereka bilang marketing. Kita dari dunia akademik tidak bisa mengajarkan hanya marketing, kita harus mengajarkan marketing sebagai alat manajemen. Maka disitu ada planning, organizing, how did you develop the organization? Ada leadership, controlling. Nah ini dibikin menyangkut manajemen. Menyangkut resources, menyangkut purchasing, keuangan, menyangkut accounting, dan perusahaan bisa untung bukan hanya karena dari marketing, tapi karena banyak hal. Disitulah kita perlu kesadaran, dan belakangan Philip Kotler menyadari dalam bukunya Marketing Move. Sayang di Indonesia tidak populer. Dia bilang holistic marketing. Dia ngomong dari value exploration .Di-explore dulu value-nya, terus harus ada value creation, baru value delivery. Selama ini orang marketing selalu fokus pada value delivery. Padahal itu baru ujungnya. Philip Kotler menyatukan hal ini. Beliau mengatakan ini holistic marketing. Marketing yang utuh. Dua ini kan strategi. Kalau ditarik lebih jauh kepada sebuah negara, bagaimana Indonesia semestinya mengkombinasikan pendekatan makro dan marketing ini untuk meningkatkan daya saing? Kalau kita ingin meningkatkan keunggulan Indonesia, kuncinya adalah produktivitas. Produktivitas itu landasannya hanya tiga. Pertama social capital. Sayang, para politisi sering merusak social capital. Social capital ini adalah dorongan dalam masyarakat yang memungkinkan anggota-anggotanya melakukan koordinasi dan kerjasama. Kalau social capital tidak dibangun, tidak ada kepercayaan. Bisnis akan susah. Mau ngomong apapun tidak akan jalan. Kedua trust. Social capital itu modalnya trust. Anda datang ke Thailand, mata orang itu baik, sementara Anda turun di Gambir, mata jealous. Trust ini penting sekali. Kalau tidak ada trust, perusahaan-perusahaan Indonesia tidak akan pernah menjadi perusahaan besar. Semuanya akan jadi perusahaan kecil. Italia yang low trust melahirkan perusahaan kecil. Kalau di higher trust society seperti Amerika, Eropa Barat bisa melahirkan Siemens, GE, Boeing. Karena itu mereka lari ke capital market lari ke labor market. Mengambil orang dari labor market, ngambil modal dari capital market. Karena kita trust-nya rendah, orang lari ke IMF, istri, mertua, family. Modalnya modal keluarga. Labor-nya dari keluarga. Semua. Tidak akan pernah perusahaan keluarga dipercaya oleh masyarakat. Yang terakhir adalah entrepreneurship. Kita baru mulai. Maka saya sangat serius bikin acara televisi tentang entrepreneurship. Bangsa ini miskin entrepreneurship. Kenapa, karena ngomongin pribumi melulu. Padahal, tidak ada cerita yang jadi pengusaha adalah pribumi. Orang Cina yang jadi pengusaha adalah Overseas Chinese. Di Cina yang jadi pengusaha bukan the mainland Chinese. Yang di Cina daratan adalah petani dan birokrat. Yahudi yang berhasil adalah Yahudi perantauan, bukan Yahudi di Israel. Orang Padang yang merantau lah yang jadi pengusaha. Yang di sana jadi petani, ulama, ketua adat. Pengusaha yang perantauan akan mulai dari bawah, tanpa kredit bank, sudah jadi, baru pinjam untuk pengembangan. Mereka tidak manja. Dan saya mengatakan ini karena ada teorinya. Bukan common sense. Maksudnya? Ada yang disebut dengan refugee mentality. Ada suatu penelitian yang dilakukan di Amerika dan Eropa, yang mengatakan orang jadi pengusaha karena mempunyai mentalitas pengungsi. Di Indonesia banyak pengusaha yang tidak sekolah. Lalu banyak orang nyimpulin bahwa kalau ingin sukses drop out aja. Ntar dulu. Yang sarjana (sukses) juga banyak. Saya punya list-nya. Yang drop out jadi penganggur lebih banyak lagi. Tidak terhingga. Jadi tidak bisa lihat satu sisi. Tapi ada teorinya educational refugee bisa mendorong orang menjadi entrepreneur. Karena dia pendidikannya rendah, cari kerja susah, kalau dia punya spirit, punya motivasi dia bisa bikin sendiri. Lama-lama bisa. Pemilik Bakmie Japos, misalnya. Bapaknya meninggal waktu dia masih kecil. Sekolah dia jualan koran di kampus. Sekolah tidak selesai, drop out. Akhirnya dia jualan mie. Dia jualan di pinggir jalan, dia merenung, merenggut setiap hari di rumahnya, di Japos. Jual ini gagal, nasi uduk gagal, akhirnya ketemu mie, mie-nya enak, bikin warung kecil laku, bikin dua, laku. Itu lah educational refugee. Contoh lain Ibu Mooryati Soedibyo, anaknya sudah mulai besar, suaminya sudah mulai pensiun. Bingung, ngapain. Refugee yang tadinya ngurusin anak menjadi ngurusin yang lain. Iya kan. Banyak lagi jenis 'mental pengungsi' yang lain, mulai dari yang educational parental hingga political refugee. Sekarang Anda bekerjasama dengan Michael Porter. Apa sebenarnya yang Anda inginkan? Saya sebenarnya tidak memilih bekerjasama dengan dia. Sebagai ketua program Pasca Sarjana Ilmu Manajemen UI, saya sedang mendalami marketing, terus saya berkenalan dengan Phillip Purnama, eksekutif di Bogasari yang muridnya Michael Porter. Selain itu Michael Porter mempunyai gagasan menjalin kerjasama dengan 14 negara dalam mengembangkan teori Cluster. Saya sebenarnya menyuruh orang lain, tetapi Harvard dan Pak Phillip menginginkan saya. Jadi saya berangkat juga. Dalam teori menajemen, bagi problem seorang intelekual adalah terlalu bergaul dengan lingkungannya sendiri. Maka produknya adalah hasil dari 'incest.' Jadinya cripple. Kalau 99% dosen di PTN bergaul dengan sesama dosen di universitas tersebut, menikah dengan sesama dosen, melakukan penelitian hanya dengan sesama dosen, maka hanya akan terjadi incest. Dari dulu saya biasa keluar. Ilmu saya biasanya di challenge oleh orang luar. Saya berinteraksi dengan berbagai disiplin ilmu. Ketemu Phillip Purmana, keahliannya dengan keahlian saya saya kawinkan. Dia dari Harvard tapi masih baru di bidang marketing. Saya minta dia ngajar di UI. Meskipun S1-nya bukan dari UI. Ternyata dia tertarik dan bisa mengembangkan. Apa yang Anda pelajari dari Porter? Dari Michael Porter itu yang match dengan saya, karena dia bisa membantu lokomotif yang saya sebutkan tadi. Yang menarik adalah saya sudah dalami entrepreneurship, saya sudah dalami marketing, sekarang saya mendapatkan strateginya. Di depan itu marketing, strategi itu di tengah, dan entrepreneurship di belakang. Itu yang saya dalami. Contohnya begini. Sesuatu dihasilkan bukan hanya karena dari marketing. Mesin fax dunia itu pasarnya US$5 miliar. Tapi tidak ada satu pun pemainnya di Amerika yang masuk dalam industri. Dulu ada Xerox, tapi Jepang ada 40-an. Korea sekitar 5 perusahaan. Kenapa? Ceritanya di Amerika mereka tidak percaya mesin fax. Karena tulis tangan dianggap payah. Kalau di Jepang kalau pake mesin ketik atau e-mail dianggap tidak sopan. Maka di Jepang fax ini adalah future industries. Demand ini yang mendorong telekomunikasi dibuka. Di Amerika harus bayar. Di Jepang input sektor sudah ada, dan trampil. Nah ini tidak bisa dijelaskan oleh marketing. Ini karena demand condition. Jadi jika ada orang marketing yang frustasi, maka saya akan mengajak untuk melihat ke tengah dan dibelakangnya, yakni strategi dan entrepreneurship tadi.*** Pakar, Entertainer dan Endorser Rhenald Kasali dikenal serbabisa. Sebagai penulis, ia telah menulis lebih dari 10 buku yang dipakai luas dalam bisnis dan pendidikan. Lebih dari 500 tulisannya tersebar di media masa utama nasional dan beberapa jurnal. Aktivitasnya bejibun. Selain Ketua Program Pasca Sarjana Ilmu Manajemen FE-UI, ia mengajar di berbagai universitas lain. Ia juga menjadi komisaris independen di PT Indofarma dan PT Dirgantara. Meraih gelar doktor dari Universitas Illinois at Urbaha Champaign, akhir tahun lalu ia menerima undangan dari Harvard University, dan bersama Michael Porter membahas Teori Cluster untuk diterapkan di Indonesia. Rhenald juga populer sebagai host pada acara Bedah Bisnis Rhenald Kasali di TPI. Jamu Tolak Angin Sido Muncul mempercayainya pula sebagai salah seorang endorser. Lewat RKS Management yang ia dirikan, ia menyelenggarakan training dan konsultansi bisnis. Sementara itu Pemerintah Indonesia mempercayainya menjadi anggota tim juri penghargaan untuk para eksportir (Primaniyarta) dan anggota komisi independen divestasi BII dan Bank Lippo. JOKO SUSILO FORMULA BISNIS

Dulu Joko Susilo juga orang susah! Tidak jauh beda dengan anda. Merantau ke Jakarta, bekerja keras untuk penghasilan pas-pasan. Badan saya kurus, hitam, dekil karena saat itu saya hanya seorang pekerja lapangan. Saat itu saya masih bujang, tapi menyedihkan. Tidak pernah sekalipun hari-hari kerjanya diisi dengan kepuasan. Selalu tertekan dengan kungkungan pekerjaan yang membuat joko tidak bisa bebas lepas seperti burung! Dia sering membayangkan, betapa bahagianya jika bisa memiliki bisnis mantap, namun dikerjakan secara santai, tidak menguras waktu, tapi menghasilkan uang melimpah. Duduk ongkang-ongkang, uang datang sendiri, dan tidak ada habis -habisnya! Punya rumah mewah, mobil bagus, istri cantik, aset bertumpuk... dan sebagainya. Joko Santosa mengenal internet... Pada tanggal 20 April 2001, Joko mulai mengenal internet. Dan dia bisa melihat, potensi yang dimiliki Internet untuk menghasilkan uang sungguh luar biasa! Dari situlah dia memiliki keyakinan mulai menggeluti dunia Internet Marketing secara serius. Satu minggu setelahnya, Joko Susilo memutuskan untuk keluar dari pekerjaan tetapnya di Jakarta. Akhirnya dia pulang ke Semarang Modal Nekat! Ini adalah keputusan tergila dan terbaik yang pernah joko susilo alami selama hidupnya walaupun awalnya banyak yang menentang. stress berat!!! Ternyata ini tidak semudah yang dia kira. Joko Susilo telah mengalami masa-masa penuh tekanan. Dunia Internet Marketing saat itu sama sekali baru baginya, dan bagi kebanyakan pelaku bisnis lainnya di Indonesia. Pengetahuan saya mulai dari NOL, trial and error di sana sini dan bahkan tidak ada satu orang pun yang membimbing saya kecuali dari artikel-artikel di Internet. Sungguh 10 bulan masa pencarian yang tidak menyenangkan! Orang tua sering menangisi , kerabat jauh dan dekat banyak yang menasehatinya agar segera sadar dan kembali ke jalan yang benar. Tapi dalam hatinya... "Never Give UP!". Mungkin sebagian dari anda pernah mengalami masa sulit seperti itu. Sampai akhirnya... Pada tanggal 7 Januari 2002 Joko Susilo menemukan metode se- derhana untuk menghasilkan uang melimpah dari internet. Dengan perasaan berdebar-debar saya melakukan persiapan selama 7 hari... dan akhirnya, sejak tanggal 15 Januari 2002 rekening saya mulai dialiri rupiah tanpa henti bahkan saat saya sedang tidur atau berlibur sekalipun.
